Om is most sacred word of Vedas. It is a symbol of both the personal god & the absolute. Every Vedic mantra [notes] starts with Om. Om is the word which represents the omni present in the exterior & interior.
Sound of word Om represents the existence of creator of all. Sound is the subject matter of sky among five basic elements that constitute the body which soul uses as carrier. Om in fact is the symbolic sound to attain the status of self with in.
